Information for Morticians and Funeral Directors

Completing the Certificate of Death using the Maryland Electronic Death Reporting System (MD-EDRS)

Beginning with deaths occurring on or after January 1, 2015, certain Medical Certifiers, including the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, will begin completing the medical portion of the Maryland Certificate of Death in MD-EDRS. If a Medical Certifier begins a death record electronically, the Funeral Director must complete the record electronically.

You will be notified that the death record was started in MD-EDRS when the body is picked up for transport to your funeral establishment.

Follow these steps to complete the record and file the certificate electronically:
  1. You will receive information on completing the record using MD-EDRS when the body is picked up for transport to your funeral establishment.
  2. You will need a username and password to access MD-EDRS. If you do not have a username and password, contact the supervising mortician of your funeral establishment immediately about filing the required documents for system access.
  3. For assistance with accessing MD-EDRS, resetting a username and password, or completing a death record, please contact the Help Desk at edrs.help@maryland.gov or 410-764-4671.
