Lt. Governor Brown to Visit Baltimore Blood Drive to Encourage Marylanders to Donate Blood

Lt. Governor's Office News Release

BALTIMORE, Md. (August 8, 2011) – Tomorrow, Lt. Governor Anthony G. Brown will visit the Johns Hopkins East Baltimore Medical Campus in Baltimore to highlight a blood drive being sponsored by the American Red Cross - Greater Chesapeake & Potomac Region.  The Lt. Governor will be joined by Johns Hopkins Health System President Ron Peterson, Red Cross representatives and local health officials for the event.

The Lt. Governor will encourage all Marylanders to consider donating blood, especially during the summer months when supplies fall due to lack of donations. The Red Cross has nine fixed donation sites across the state where individuals can donate. Donors with O negative type blood are especially encouraged given their universal-donor status. Anyone interested in donating blood should call 1-800-RED CROSS or go online at www.redcrossblood.org to schedule an appointment.

The event will also highlight the successful Maryland Blood Wastage Reduction Collaborative program.  Developed in the summer of 2009 and sponsored by the Maryland Health Quality and Cost Council, which Lt. Governor Brown chairs, the collaborative has enabled Maryland’s 44 acute care hospitals to share best practices and increase communication about blood supplies and shortages in order to reduce wasted blood throughout the state of Maryland.
