DHMH To Launch Maryland Greater Than AIDS Campaign

Baltimore City, Maryland -- June 25, 2012- The Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH), Infectious Disease and Environmental Health Administration (IDEHA) joins many partners, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Kaiser Family Foundation, Greater Than AIDS, as well as state and local partners around the country in recognizing June 27, 2012 as National HIV Testing Day.

"The unified efforts of our many partners working to increase HIV testing, prevention, and treatment services in Maryland are commendable," said DHMH Secretary Joshua Sharfstein. "When it comes to HIV, knowledge of your status is power to improve and protect your health."

On this important day of HIV awareness, DHMH is officially launching the Greater Than AIDS Campaign in Maryland.  The Greater Than AIDS Movement is a national media, community outreach campaign that aims to elevate the public's knowledge and understanding of HIV/AIDS and confront the stigma surrounding the disease.  Maryland's Greater Than AIDS campaign will target billboards, radio announcements, and other advertising in the most heavily affected areas of our State.

"Currently, there are approximately 30,000 people living with HIVand an estimated additional 7,500 Marylanders who are not aware that they have HIV," said IDEHA Director, Heather Hauck. "The Maryland Greater Than AIDS campaign is a tremendous opportunity to encourage more Marylanders to Get educated about HIV, Get tested for HIV, and Get treated if they have HIV so they can live healthier, longer lives."

A press conference will be held at 10:00am on June 27, 2012 at two Walgreens locations in Maryland: 4020 Eastern Avenue, Baltimore, Maryland 21224 and 9001 Woody Terrace, Clinton, Maryland 20735.
