BALTIMORE, MD (February 1, 2012) – Department of Health and Mental Hygiene Secretary Joshua M. Sharfstein, M.D., announced that he has appointed Carole J. Catalfo to be Executive Director of the Maryland Board of Physicians. Ms. Catalfo, who begins her new position on February 21, brings to the Board significant experience in licensure, professional discipline and regulatory compliance.
A former prosecutor and government attorney, Ms. Catalfo has a long history of public service in the compliance and regulatory fields, most recently with the Maryland Department of Education, where she served as an Education Program Specialist on state teacher certification and eligibility requirements.
She has participated in all phases of the institutional licensure/suspension/regulation process, and has experience in program management, quality assurance initiatives and strategic budgeting and operations planning. While working in the state of Kentucky as an assistant state counsel representing social services, she designed and implemented a plan that led to the resolution of a large backlog of foster care cases within 18 months and, as a chief county child support prosecutor, the resolution of nearly 3,800 cases within two years.
“Carole Catalfo is the right person at the right time for the Board of Physicians,” said Dr. Sharfstein. “She brings both deep experience in regulatory compliance and professional oversight and a fresh perspective on the challenges facing the Board.”
Ms. Catalfo is a member of the Kentucky and District of Columbia Bar Associations and earned a Bachelor of Science from the University of New Hampshire. She received her Juris Doctorate degree from the University of Louisville School of Law.
