DR. DAVID S. HELSEL NAMED CEO OF CLIFTON T. PERKINS HOSPITAL CENTER
Baltimore, MD (November 2, 2011) – The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH) today announced the appointment of Dr. David S. Helsel as CEO of the Clifton T. Perkins Hospital Center.
Since 2004, Dr. Helsel has served as the CEO of the Spring Grove Hospital Center in Catonsville. Dr. Helsel graduated from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine in 1980, and subsequently completed his residency in psychiatry at the University of Maryland Hospital in Baltimore. He has served as an Assistant Professor at the University of Maryland Hospital, and an Associate Professor at the St. George’s University School of Medicine in Bay Shore, New York. Prior to taking over as CEO at Spring Grove, he worked in various management capacities at the facility for 20 years, including as Clinical Director and Chief of Medical Staff from 1988 to 2004.
“Dr. Helsel is one of the most experienced and accomplished administrators and psychiatrists in our state," said Dr. Joshua M. Sharfstein, Secretary of DHMH. “His steady hand will help guide Perkins through this difficult time.”
“Dr. Helsel’s expertise in clinical care and team building, and his focus on recovery will be critical assets to Perkins,” said Dr. Brian Hepburn, Executive Director of the Mental Hygiene Administration. “I am pleased that he will be taking the helm as we work to address challenges and move forward in a safe environment.”
Dr. Helsel has begun his transition, meeting with senior leadership to discuss challenges facing Perkins, and will officially begin as CEO on November 14, 2011. The Chief of Clinical Operations at Spring Grove, Cheryl Heilman, MS, RN, will become interim CEO of Spring Grove Hospital Center upon Dr. Helsel’s departure.
