DHMH Press Releases : DHMH Unveils New Web Portal with County-Level Health Data

BALTIMORE (April 19, 2012) – The Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH) has partnered with the Hilltop Institute at the University of Maryland at Baltimore County to create an interactive website that provides county-level data on a variety of health conditions and indicators among Medicaid recipients. The site provides expanded public access to Medicaid data, providing a better picture of population health by county.
The website can be found at The site features maps that include data on chronic diseases, such as asthma, diabetes and hypertension, as well as other health indicators like flu shots and dental visits. There are also maps with data on mental health conditions and substance abuse.
Data on the site show, for example:
  • The percent of Medicaid recipients by county with a diagnosis of Asthma

  • The number of Medicaid recipients by age and by county with a diagnosis of Diabetes

  • The percent of Medicaid recipients with dental visits from 2007-2011 by county

“This portal provides data on a wide range of health conditions,” said Dr. Laura Herrera, Chief Medical Officer of DHMH. "We intend to build on this foundation and make more data available over time."
"These data will help localities plan for health improvement," said Frances B. Phillips, Deputy Secretary for Public Health Services. "Our Local Health Improvement Coalitions can use this information to help them assess some of the key health conditions that can be prevented or addressed."
