DHMH Press Releases : Clifton T. Perkins Hospital Center

Baltimore, MD (October 28, 2011) Maryland DHMH Secretary Dr. Joshua M. Sharfstein released the following statement regarding patient deaths at Clifton T. Perkins Hospital Center:

“The events at the Clifton T. Perkins Hospital over the last week are tragic and unacceptable. Hospitals are places for healing, not violence. Perkins Hospital has taken many steps to strengthen the safety of its environment, but more needs to be done. These specific events are under investigation. In addition, the medical director of the Mental Hygiene Administration, Dr. Gayle Jordan-Randolph, is working directly with the leadership of Perkins Hospital to manage this challenge and implement additional safety measures. She will also oversee a full review of the hospital’s policies regarding safety, including patient selection and the clinical management of patients with the potential for violence. This review will include engaging independent experts. We will take all necessary steps to support the safety of Perkins Hospital.”

Dr. Sharfstein and Dr. Jordan-Randolph will hold media availability this afternoon to discuss next steps to ensure the safety of patients and staff at the state forensic hospital.
