THE MARYLAND HEALTH CARE COMMISSION ANNOUNCES APPOINTMENT OF BEN STEFFEN AS EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Baltimore MD (October 12, 2012) - The Maryland Health Care Commission announced the appointment of Ben Steffen as Executive Director. For the past year, Mr. Steffen has been serving as Acting Executive Director of the Commission.  In this role, he has been a spokesman for the Commission on State health care expenditures, physician work force, physician uncompensated care, and information security. In the 2012 regular session of the General Assembly, he successfully shepherded legislation that will continue the State’s regulatory oversight of primary and non-primary percutaneous coronary intervention services.

“We are happy to announce the well-deserved appointment of Ben Steffen as Executive Director,” said Commission Chair Craig Tanio. “Ben has done an outstanding job over the last year and we are excited about his leadership going forward.”

Ben Steffen has been with the Commission or its predecessor since 1994 and previously served as Director of the Commission’s Center for Analysis and Health Information Services. This Center has analytic and operational responsibilities for health care practitioner initiatives in the State including development of an All Payer Claims Database and the Patient Centered Medical Home Program. Earlier in his career, Mr. Steffen served as a budget analyst in the Health, Housing, and Income Security Division of the Congressional Budget Office, where he worked on health care initiatives that lead to reforms of Medicare payment systems for hospital services. Mr. Steffen holds a Master of Arts degree from American University and completed post-graduate work at the University of Michigan.  Mr. Steffen served as an American Peace Corps volunteer in Nepal.
