Enhancing motivation for change
Motivational interviewing is a person-centered goal-directed counseling method for resolving ambivalence and promoting positive change by eliciting and strengthening the person's own motivation for change.
Motivational interviewing is an evidence-based practice designed
for engaging ambivalent or resistant people (Squires and Moyers 2001).
The Mental Hygiene Administration and the University of Maryland Mental Health Services Training Center are offering a training series in motivational interviewing. This training is designed to be presented on-site to organizations or agencies. Each series will consist of 16 hours of training, which may be done as one whole day and two half days, or, ideally, four half days. The sessions will be spread out so participants have the chance to practice between sessions, ideally about a week apart. The sessions can accommodate about 20 participants. Following the on-site training, there will be an opportunity for monthly follow-up consultation with the instructor for up to 5 months.
CEU’s will be provided dependent on attendance at the sessions. The total cost for four days of training and monthly follow-ups is $3200. For 20 self-pay individuals, the cost would be $160 per person.
Motivational Interviewing-Intermediate Level sessions may be provided at a later date.
