For the Elderly

Elders may need special assistance. You must plan for support services that they will need if you are not at home when an event starts. Who will do this if you or a regular care-giver cannot be there? Elders may be confused and concerned about the changes that will occur during an emergency. They may need guidance and supervision, meal preparation, and maybe an alternate place to go until you can get home.

Adult day care may not be operational, or may be forced to close early, or not be able to provide return transportation. What are your alternatives? Who will become part of you plan?

Keeping in Contact: An important part of your plan is how you will contact one another and review what you will do in different situations.

• What special care is needed by those in your care?
• Who can cover if at-home aides can't stay?
• Ask your doctor about storing prescription medications such as heart and high blood pressure medication, insulin and other prescription drugs and materials (syringes).
• Denture needs
• Incontinence and other personal care products
• Contact lenses and supplies
• Extra eye glasses
• Identify agencies in your area that may assist with transportation and evacuation in the event it is needed.
