Board of Occupational Therapy Practice

Welcome to the website of the Maryland Board of Occupational Therapy Practice.  The Board was formed in 1979 to regulate the practice of occupational therapy in the State of Maryland.  Our main goal is to protect the Maryland public through the licensure and regulation of occupational therapists and occupational therapy assistants.  The Board reviews the credentials of all applicants and strives to ensure that only qualified individuals are permitted to practice occupational therapy in Maryland. The Board is a place where the public can call with inquiries about licensed individuals. Also,  consumers can file a complaint against practitioners they feel may be in possible violation of the law.

Board meetings are held the third Friday of every month on the 4th floor of the Bland Bryant Building on the grounds of the Spring Grove Hospital Center.  The general session of the meeting is open to the public.  The executive session is not.  Meeting minutes and agenda can be viewed by clicking on the link to Board Information below.

Licenses and course selections can be verified online by selecting the appropriate link under "Online Services".  All active and inactive licenses expire on June 30th.

Renewals:  The next renewal period will begin in May.  Instructions will be mailed during the month of April.   In order to be eligible for licensure renewal, you must have earned 12 contact hours between January 1 and December 31 of the previous year.  The 12 contact hours shall consist of a minimum of 8 contact hours related to occupational therapy principles and procedures and a maximum of 4 contact hours through occupational therapy role-related activities, as defined in COMAR  Please consult 2015_10.46.04_Reference_Guide.pdf for a complete listing of the continuing competency programs and activities.  The complete regulations can be found in COMAR 10.46.04. Those individuals who were originally licensed after July 1st do not need any hours for the first renewal period.   In lieu of the 12 contact hours, the board also recognizes the maintenance of current NBCOT certification as fulfilling the requirements of continuing competency.  Please contact us at 410-402-8560 for more information.
