Summary of Requirements for Certification of Alcohol and Drug
Counselors by the Board of Professional Counselors and Therapists

 


 

Title CPC-AD CAC-AD CSC-AD
Academic degree required from an accredited college Masters with (60 credits) or Doctorate with (90 credits) in Health and Human Services counseling field Bachelors in Health And Human Services Counseling field Associates degree in Health And Human Services counseling field
Minimum credit hours in A & D specific course work (see list of courses attached) 27 credits from the courses below, in addition to a 3 -credit ethics course w/focus on A&D counseling 21 credits from the courses  below, in addition to a 1- credit ethics course w/focus on A & D counseling 15 credits, from the courses below, in addition to a 1 credit ethics course w/focus on A & D counseling
Documented supervised experience in A & D counseling 3 years, and 2,000 hours. 2 years must be after awarding of degree 3 years and 2,000 hours. 2 years must be after awarding of degree 2 years, and 2000 hours. 1 year  must be after awarding of degree
Examination required to pass EMAC (NBCC) and State Law Test MAPBC ICRC/AODA exam and State Law Test MAPCB ICRC/AODA exam and State Law Test
Scope of Practice May not diagnose and treat mental and emotional disorders.  No other statement or restrictions can be in private practice or any agency/facility settiing Must practice under supervision of a CPC-AD or another health care provider approved by the Board, or as an employee of a JCAHO facility or program certified under Title 8, Subtitle 4 of the Health General Article Must practice under the supervision of a CPC-AD or another health care provider approved by the Board, and while an employee of a JCAHO facility or program certified under Title 8, Subtitle 4 of the Health-General Article

 Alcohol and Drug Core Courses

All courses must be from an accredited college. All qualifying courses must be at least 3 credits
